Kata Nori Handroll Bar

Kata Nori is a gorgeous formal sushi restaurant in the heart of downtown KC.  You will find its black and gold storefront set into historic brick to be charming and inviting. Inside is a breathtaking world of warm wood and subtle black furnishings, which draw you artistically toward the handroll bar in the center.

Watch your sushi, sashimi, and specialty rolls come to life at the hands of sushi artists, where every plate is a masterpiece, and every bite will send you down a historical path of flavor and perfection. From the appetizers and cocktails to the perfectly prepared sushi, Kata Nori is by far the best place for formal, traditional sushi in Kansas City.

Kura Revolving Sushi Bar

In the bustling Westport neighborhood, you will find Kura Revolving Sushi Bar, a novel experience that you simply cannot miss. The revolving sushi bar is a tradition that everyone should try at least once. You can find Kura by the elegant pillars and the strings of colored lights on the outside. Not to mention the satisfyingly massive door featuring the restaurant's bold logo.

The rotating sushi bar is the Japanese automat, a trendy, futuristic style cafe design where you can snag delicious bites of sushi, sashimi, sides, desserts, and other Japanese dishes one small plate at a time. Each dish is a tasty treat, from classic favorites to new surprises. You can order with the touchpad or grab something at random.

They even have a rolling robot to bring you drinks. It's definitely a fun experience to share with friends.

Mr Le's Sushi

Mr Le's Sushi is one of KC's hidden gems. Located in an unassuming strip mall, this little restaurant is the best place to find Vietnamese and Japanese cuisine. Not to mention great sushi.

You feel the vibes of a family restaurant the moment you step through the door. There are adorable baby pictures along the back wall behind the sushi bar, where you can snag a seat and watch the magic happen. Inside the bar's glass enclosure, you can see crab, cucumber, salmon, and tofu, which make up the rolls. Or you can get a table or booth with your party and immerse yourself in good conversation over beautiful platters of sushi, pho, and tempura.

Despite the modest surroundings, every plate is a work of art in beautiful, sectional dishware richly glazed to make a wonderful dining experience. We rarely say that sushi is served generously, but the 8-piece rolls at Mr Le's are both beautifully crafted and surprisingly large. You and your friends will be more than satisfied, and it's not unusual to take a few pieces to go.

Sayachi Sushi

Sayachi Sushi is the perfect balance between a casual and formal sushi restaurant. The space is light and airy, but the furnishings are sleek and elegant. The walls are painted with cherry blossom branches, and each plate is beautifully arranged. Yet the place maintains an airy and relaxed environment that makes it perfect for both a casual lunch or a formal dinner.

Sayachi is known for fantastic sushi rolls, gorgeous sashimi, and delicate nigiri, along with artistic sides and traditional ramen that make for a perfectly complete menu. This pairs wonderfully with cocktails, saki, and wine from the bar, making Sayachi a delicious part of the KC nightlife.

OMO Japanese Ramen & Sushi

OMO is a festive sushi bar with an uplifting and energetic atmosphere. The fairy lights above, the vivid panels of wall art, and the subtly light industrial vibe invite big groups to enjoy lively meals together without the hush of formal dining. The sushi plates are more than just rolls on beautiful dishware. They are festive with colorful flower blossoms and creative garnishes that make every plate a celebration. And don't forget the beautiful bowls of traditional ramen.

It's no surprise that OMO is known for hosting parties and catering. They know how to make a meal feel like an event every time.

Friends Sushi & Bento Place

Last but not least is Friends Sushi & Bento Place. Friends has a casual bar vibe with LED stars on the ceiling in the cool, dim environment as you step off of the bustling W 39th Street.  Take your pick of specialty sushi rolls or delicate sashimi and nigiri to sate your craving. The bento boxes are also spectacular, with beautiful bento plates, large portions, and a wonderful variety of sides and sweets in every box.
